What is Tallow and why do I use it
Tallow is rendered beef fat. Rendering is the process that melts raw fat and makes it into tallow. Beef Tallow; more specifically beef fat from cows that were strictly grass-fed i.e. 100% completely pastured/grazed on grass, so closely resembles our own natural sebum (sebum is the oil produced by the glands in our skin) Because of this close resemblance is one of the main reasons why most all skin types can benefit so positively by the use of Tallow. A little tidbit on the word sebum- the Latin origin/meaning of the word sebum is tallow. Tallow has been used for many centuries before us; our ancestors respected what God created and provided for us, to nourish our bodies inside AND out. (our ancestors knew what worked and what was good, they used what God created and provided, and not what was synthetically created/man made and there is a reason for that.)
Tallow is amazing for skin due to its ability to provide a rich abundance of beneficial nutrients that skin needs to stay healthy, soft, youthful, rejuvenate and repair itself. Tallow is a very healthy, natural, unadulterated fat. It contains a wide array of all the beneficial vitamins & nutrients that our skin needs to repair itself. In my opinion it is the best moisturizer to use if you want healthy skin, this is based on my own experience using a multitude of moisturizers and eczema creams, and then discovering Tallow years ago and switching. Many of the nutrients in grass fed tallow help to promote youthful skin by providing substances that our skin naturally loses as we age. Tallow is extremely compatible with the oil that our skin naturally produces (remember earlier where I explain how it closely resembles our own skin sebum). It actually shares a similar biology. This one of the main reasons why our skin is able to use tallow so effectively. Tallow provides skin with very intense moisture, and the experience of this intense moisturizing effect is immediate when you apply Tallow to your skin. I promise you, there is nothing better than tallow for soothing, repairing and hydrating dry skin. Tallow is not only great for repairing skin, but it also helps to prevent damage to skin. All of those skin friendly antioxidants and other nutrients keep skin healthy and strong.
Tallow contains natural antimicrobial properties that help to prevent acne and breakouts. It also contains powerful anti inflammatory properties. It carries a natural SPF of 4%. Tallow won’t cause irritation, and has been a welcomed and praised relief to those suffering from eczema, skin irritations and severely dry skin. It is rich in so many beneficial vitamins, nutrients, and fatty acids. Nearly half the percentage of the fatty acid composition of tallow is oleic acid. This acid is classified as a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid and boasts the benefits of helping with dry or aging skin due to it’s ability to easily and deeply penetrate into the skin’s surface, helping to replenish lost moisture. Oleic acid works to bring the natural oil production back into balance and in doing so can aid in preventing future breakouts. Even more importantly, it doesn’t clog the pores, Tallow is non comedogenic. What it does do is helps to form a protective layer on the skin’s surface that can prevent further skin damage. Along with these benefits it contains high antioxidants, all positives in fighting off free radicals. Palmitic acid is an important fatty acid for mature skin. A little more than a quarter percent of the fatty acid composition of Tallow is palmitic acid. One of the reasons Tallow is so good as a moisturizer is because of this fatty acid. Palmitic acid is a very good emollient, and because of this it helps make the skin very soft, by improving the smoothness of skin, and helps with skin’s barrier function, which decreases as we age. Palmitic Acid benefits skin by helping to retain moisture forming a barrier layer over the skin. Palmitoleic Acid is a very active antimicrobial in our skin. It is one of the basic building blocks of our skin, but it decreases as we age. Stearic acid, the last of the three is another saturated fatty acid found in high concentrations in tallow. It is a fatty acid that is found in the outer layer of our skin, and in our sebum. Stearic acid helps to repair skin, improve the flexibility of skin, and improves skin’s barrier function.
